Date: 17 Dec 2008

The Mayor of London has announced £4.6 million funding for Waltham Forest to reduce road deaths, improve town centres and carry out road maintenance.

The cash, from Transport for London, will deliver local transport improvements during the next financial year.

Waltham Forest Council will also be given greater freedom in choosing what they can spend the money on –n with £100,000 allocated for spending on transport schemes chosen by the Council.

The money will be spent on a range of projects including:

  • Road renewal works on Lea Bridge and Forest Roads to repair uneven surfaces, potholes and cracks to make journeys smoother and safer for all road users.
  • Strengthening railway bridges in the borough.
  • Introducing road safety schemes throughout the borough that will include 20mph zones and traffic calming measures such as road narrowing to reduce accidents.
  • Providing a new foot and cycle path with new lighting, fencing and signing between Lockwood Way and Coppermill Lane.
  • Cycle training and cycle parking in shopping centres.
  • Improvements to bus priority arrangements including a design study of Wood Street and Forest Road Junction linked with improvements to Wood Street shopping centre.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise and Investment, Cllr Terry Wheeler, said: “This is good news for Waltham Forest because it means we can implement schemes to reduce road accidents and help people to move more quickly and safely around the borough.

“We’ll be working hard to make sure the projects funded by this money really improve our transportation links and mean smoother journeys for everyone, regardless of their mode of travel.”

Funding for local transport schemes is allocated each year by Transport for London in response to the applications from boroughs based on their Local Implementation (transport) Plans.

Funding is available for a wide range of work including road safety, maintaining borough roads, improving walking, cycling and the local environment.
